The aim of this study was to describe the use of acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI) elastography in the evaluation of testicular disorders in dogs. Eighteen dogs with testicular disorders (thirty-six testicles) were assessed. Echotexture, size, contours and margins of testes were analysed by ultrasonography. Deformities and tissue stiffness (greyscale and homogenous or heterogeneous) were evaluated by qualitative elastography and shear velocity was determined quantitatively. Subsequent to orchiectomy, testicular samples were collected for histopathology analysis and thirty-six disorders were identified. Elasticity moduli in round wooden beams of Pinus caribaea REA

ABSTRACT This research aimed at estimating both longitudinal (E) and shear (G) elasticity moduli of round structural-sized beams made of Pinus caribaea timber, verifying thus the validity of the G = E/ 20 relationship established by the Brazilian standard ABNT NBR 7190: 1997 (Designing of Wooden Structures). We tested twenty pieces of green wood with average length, diameter and conicity of 750 cm, 30 cm and 4%, respectively. Two static bending tests were applied at three points of each piece, being nondestructive and using different distances between supports. Mechanical behaviour of HMPE and aramid fibre ropes for deep sea handling operations ArchiMer

This paper describes the mechanical behaviour of ropes used for deep sea oceanographic operations. First the requirements of deep sea handling ropes are presented. Two high performance fibres are commonly used, aramid co-polymer and high modulus polyethylene (HMPE), and these are then compared. Results from tests on single fibres and 50 ton break load braided ropes are presented, which show that the initial stiffness of a new HMPE rope increases with load level in a bedding-in process resulting from both molecular alignment and construction reorientation.
